ADFS vs. Domain Trust (other suggestions?)

Issue:  We are moving servers to an offsite host and I want to know the different ways for my users to authenticate with onsite credentials to that offsite domain.

ADFS:  I posted a question here to help get clarification on an ADFS farm that is redundant in case I lose an in-house server.  I was suggested to setup an ADFS farm with (6) servers (2 for WID, 2 for proxy and 2 for NLB).

Surely there is an alternative to setting up (6) servers while maintaining security and redundancy.

Domain Trust:  Saw this where it explains External Trust.

Are there other options?  I'm open to hearing the different ways for my users to authenticate with onsite credentials to that offsite domain while maintaining security and redundancy.

Is there an option that will allow users to log into the offsite host if the fiber is cut onsite?

I currently use DirSync to push usernames and passwords to Office 365.  Is there an option similar to this?  Will DirSync work for a non-Exchange environment?

Many thanks in advance and Happy Holidays!

-John
